A sweet, sweet Polestar for your time:

Quick question for you Swedish-brick-loving oppos: Does a 2006 Volvo XC70 / “Cross Country” have a way to shift out of Park without the key in the ignition? Many automatics have this ability with a simple button, or lever, or somewhere you insert the key to bypass the shift lock mechanism. But as far as I can tell, the ‘06 XC70 I most recently had the pleasure of attempting to move without being able to turn the key past position 1, does not have any such mechanism short of disconnecting the shift cable from the transmission itself.

In the end, we were able to vise-grip the key by the metal part and turn the key past where it was getting hung up in the ignition switch, and start the car. But WTF? I know the prior and later generations of the same car BOTH have the ability to do this, as do many other cars.

This is also why I do not own any automatics.

Volvo 960/S90 were the last cars to have it back in 1998. For P2, you would have to remove to panel to force it at the cable. At the end though, it’s easier to move it at the PNP switch on the transmission under the airbox

yeah, I was about to take out the airbox and look there, but we were able to get the car running... Interesting, the newer cars have an override too:

just not the P2 apparently.

Thanks for the reply! I thought it might be a mandated safety feature or something, but I guess not.
